Embodied Dreams: Reshaping Trauma in Memorial Drive | Graduate School Paper

This paper examines how Natasha Trethewey’s Memorial Drive constructs a narrative of trauma through dreams, positioning the unconscious as a primary site of memory formation. Motivated by a gap in trauma and memory studies, which often overlook dreaming as critical to narrative structure, this paper asks how trauma is remembered in states where conscious control is weakened and how dreams actively reshape, rather than simply recover, the past. Drawing on trauma theory, dream psychology, and Federico García Lorca’s concept of duende, the paper argues that the dreams in Memorial Drive function not as symbolic reflections but as embodied, cognitive spaces where memory is re-experienced and transformed. Through recurring dreams, moments of sleep paralysis, and reflections on selective forgetting, Trethewey reveals memory as unstable, involuntary, and deeply tied to the body and the unconscious mind. Ultimately, the paper concludes that Memorial Drive redefines traumatic memory as an ongoing, often unconscious process, shaped through recurrence and artistic expression; demonstrating that dreams are essential to how trauma is both endured, narrated, and remembered.
